The fire broke out yesterday afternoon at the restaurant on the Molenvaart. A lot of smoke was released, causing local residents to be evacuated. One of those local residents is Delano Jeninga. “We stood outside at first, but then I went to a friend’s.”

The front part of the building in particular was completely destroyed. The damage appears to be limited at the rear. It is impossible to see what it looks like inside.

Popular gathering place in the village

Local residents and villagers come by the day after the fire to see the condition of their beloved restaurant. The villagers speak fondly about the case. “There is not much left of our neighborhood pub. It’s a shame,” says Delano.

It was the center of the village, especially during the fair. “Everyone has celebrated a fair here before. This summer again. So everyone is curious about how it will go,” says an older local resident who is there every year. “This is where everyone came together. We don’t have much else in the village. At least not as nice as this. A big loss.”

Asbestos released

The fire in the building also released asbestos. The building is cordoned off with fences and tapes that warn of the hazardous substance.

Measurements by the fire brigade show that the asbestos only ended up on the plot of the restaurant itself. According to the municipality of Hollands Kroon, local residents do not have to worry.
