THEthe delicate balance between the digital freedom of adolescents and their psychological safety today marks a new chapter. Instagram has announced the introduction of a crucial feature: a notification system that will quickly inform parents if your children repeatedly try to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm. An attempt at mental health prevention, to protect underage girls and boys.
Research on self-harm? Instagram notifications to parents
The update introduced by the social platformit is not just a technical question, but is part of a broader plan which, after infinite requests and, sometimes, complaints, provides a change in philosophy in the approach to the protection of minors online. If until now, in fact, the platform limited itself to blocking dangerous searches, directing the user towards emergency numbers or support associations, with this innovation, the circle closes directly involving the reference figures in the real world: the family.
How the new monitoring system works
The mechanism is activated through “supervision” tools, a series of options that parents can activate to monitor their children’s activities with the latter’s consent. If a teenager types critical terms or phrases that indicate the intention to harm oneself recurrently and in a short period of time, the system will send an immediate alert.

Alert on email, SMS or WhatsApp
The notification will not only arrive within the Instagram application, but will use direct channels such as email, SMS or WhatsApp. The goal is to ensure that the adult does not lose information among the many daily notifications. Once you click on the alert, the parent will see a full-screen message explaining the situationoffering clear context about what happened.
Help to manage difficult conversations
Receiving a warning regarding your child’s mental health can be a traumatic and frightening experience. For this reason, Instagram won’t just raise the alarm, but will provide a number of practical resources developed together with experts in psychology and suicide prevention. These materials are designed to guide parents in that critical moment following the notification. The guides offer tips on how to transform a moment of crisis into an opportunity for dialogue and emotional closenessavoiding impulsive reactions that could push the adolescent to withdraw further.
The criterion of notifications to parents
One of the most complex aspects in designing this tool was find the right balance so as not to excessively invade the children’s privacy. The system will not flag every single search, but will focus on repeated behaviors over a short period of time, which are often a sign of a deeper discomfort or a passing obsession.
Instagram chooses caution
Meta, the company that owns Instagram, he admitted that a prudent approach was chosen. This means that, in some cases, parents may receive a notification even if there is no real or immediate danger. However, the comparison with the Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Groupa consultancy group made up of external experts specializing in issues of suicide and self-harm, led to the conclusion that a “false alarm” is preferable to a potentially fatal silence.
The protection also extends to artificial intelligence
The social platform does not stop there, aware that the digital landscape is changing rapidly and teenagers no longer only use search engines or traditional social networksbut they are increasingly interacting with artificial intelligence. These systems, which simulate human conversations, have become digital confidants for many young people. For this reason, Meta is already working to extend these notifications also to interactions with their AI systems. This integration is expected later this year.
Timing and arrival in Italy
The gradual release of the function will officially begin next week in some pilot countries: United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. In this first phase, both parents and adolescents who already use supervision will be informed of the update via information messages. As for Italy and the rest of Europe, the feature will be introduced later in the yearonce the necessary adaptations to local privacy regulations have been completed. In the meantime, Instagram will continue to hide from minors content that normalizes psychological distresskeeping active the help lines that appear automatically when you carry out sensitive searches.
