The Helderse Begraafplaats is one of the oldest in the Netherlands, it is already from the 17th century and has a rich history. Guided tours have been given for years, but to ensure that these stories are stored, the information can be read and seen via QR codes.
“Of course we notice that cemeteries are often places that evoke a lot of sad emotions, but we want here in Den Helder that it is also seen as a park. So that it is not a scary or sad place, but that you can also enjoy it,” says Monique Markus of the municipality of Den Helder who brought the plan to roll.
Cemeteries are more
Together with the National Organization Cemeteries (LOB), Den Helder worked on a manual about sharing information about cemeteries, so that other cemeteries can use this as a guideline. It is a good addition to the traditional role, says Wouter Loef van de Lob. “The function of cemeteries is changing,” he says. “People no longer only come to visit a grave, but want to know much more, really experience something.”
