WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – According to media reports, US President-elect Donald Trump’s son Donald Jr. wants to travel to Greenland. The 47-year-old wanted to arrive in the capital Nuuk on Tuesday, reported the US broadcaster Fox News and the portal “The Hill”. In recent weeks, the future President Trump had laid claim to Greenland, which belongs to Denmark. “The Hill” wrote that the 47-year-old son was traveling privately and would not meet government officials in Greenland.

“As someone who has traveled to some amazing places around the world as a nature lover, I’m excited to stop in Greenland this week to have a little fun,” Fox News quoted Trump’s son as saying. According to the broadcaster, Donald Trump Jr. wants to meet locals in Greenland this Tuesday, visit cultural sites and record material for videos and podcasts. The president’s eldest son has not yet been slated for any official position in Trump’s administration, at least publicly. But he was heavily involved in the election campaign.

Island is strategically important

The Republican Trump, who will move back into the White House on January 20th, recently wrote on the online platform Truth Social, which he co-founded: “In the interest of national security and freedom in the world, the USA is of the opinion that “The possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” Trump had already proposed buying Greenland during his first term in office. Denmark clearly rejected this.

The huge Greenland with its around 56,000 inhabitants is largely autonomous. Due to its location in the Arctic, its proximity to Russia, suspected mineral resources there and an important US military base, the island is strategically important not only for the USA. In terms of area, Greenland is about six times larger than Germany./nau/DP/he
