At BVB the air is getting thinner and thinner for Nuri Sahin. Apparently those responsible at Borussia Dortmund are already looking in the background for a successor to the hapless coach. The Dutchman Erik ten Hag was previously considered the top candidate, but a new media report rules out a collaboration between the former Manchester United team manager and the troubled Black and Yellows.
Even after the recent 2-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, the BVB bosses stood behind Nuri Sahin – at least for now. The first three league games of the new year were all lost, especially the desolate 2:4 at newly promoted Holstein Kiel left a lasting impression.
In the penultimate league phase match of the Champions League against FC Bologna (Tuesday from 9:00 p.m. in the LIVE ticker), Sahin should now receive a personal final. If his team also disappoints with the Italians, his days as Borussia coach are likely to be numbered.
In order not to be unprepared if the worst comes to the worst, Dortmund’s sporting leadership is apparently already exploring the coaching market. Urs Fischer, Sandro Wagner and Roger Schmidt were traded, but the top candidate was Erik ten Hag, who recently visited Signal Iduna Park. This was reported by “WAZ”, among others.
According to information from the BVB-affiliated “Ruhr Nachrichten”, ten Hag is not an issue for the Champions League finalists last season. “Reputable sources” had “strongly assured” the newspaper that the 54-year-old could be “excluded” as Sahin’s successor.
BVB apparently in contact with Roger Schmidt
According to the “RN”, there should be “contact” with Roger Schmidt. The German is currently without a club after leaving SL Benfica.
After 18 match days, BVB is only in tenth place in the Bundesliga table, and the premier class places are already seven points away. Four days after the Bologna duel, the crisis summit with Werder Bremen, who also started the new year weakly, is on the agenda for the Westphalia team.
