Renze Klamer has had to deal with Mart Smeets in the Hilversum field and he didn’t like it very much. “It was really hell,” he says. “So haughty.”
Mart Smeets claims to have improved his life after decades of bad and inappropriate behavior in the Dutch television world. He made waves three weeks ago in the Omroep MAX talk show of Carrie ten Napel, the daughter of one of his best friends. The boss of that broadcaster, Jan Slagter, is satisfied with this.
Human Mart
It’s a good thing that Mart did this, says Jan at the table RENZE. “We of course had the fragment with Coen Verbraak, in which he said: ‘That’s how you get a red card!’, and I saw him sitting with Carrie and then I suddenly saw a completely different Mart Smeets, who also admitted that he was a jerk at times.”
“I don’t know exactly what words he used, but that’s what it came down to. I thought that was quite nice. You can see that he has thought about it and what he did wrong. Look, I still think he’s a top journalist. It’s one of the best we’ve had in the Netherlands. And with Carrie I found him human and vulnerable.”
‘So haughty!’
Host Renze Klamer thinks it’s all very late. “At lastbecause it took a while.”
Jan: “Better now than never.”
Renze: “Not halfway through, it’s too late for that, haha. He was one of the most haughty men I have ever encountered in Hilversum.”
Table guest Angela de Jong: “Yes. If you had to call him as a reporter it was always hell.”
‘Really hell’
Renze thinks Mart is horrible. “It was really hell. The man never missed an opportunity to put you in your place, to be derogatory, to show that he knew it all ten times better and that you were actually nothing. With everyone around.”
Jan: “He also took me once… That was at the presentation of the Televizier gala and then he simply shouted, while I was not in the room: ‘Yes, Jan Slagter, it can also be done without an autocue!’”
‘Why?!’
Renze doesn’t understand that at all. “Why?!”
Jan: “Yes, why?! It didn’t make any sense while I was just sitting at home, you know. It doesn’t matter, I still think he’s a nice man. He has shown that he has done things wrong. Fine.”
By the way, Jan and Angela did not argue during Renze’s broadcast. A unique one.
