Relatives start petition against the release of murderer Chanel-Naomi Eleveld

Relatives of Chanel-Naomi Eleveld, who was murdered in Assen in 1999, have started a petition against the possible release of Jan S.

S. was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2000 for the murder and other crimes. The Advisory Board for those sentenced to life imprisonment is now assessing his release, reports the Telegraph.

The Board assesses whether a prisoner who has been sentenced to life imprisonment after 25 years can start with activities aimed at a possible return to society.

The 7-year-old Chanel-Naomi Eleveld disappeared on July 21, 1999 when she went to play outside in Assen. Three weeks later, the police arrested Jan S., who lived in the same street as the girl. S. had previously been convicted of sexual offenses. A day later, her body was found in the crawl space of S. Jan S.’s home and was sentenced to life in prison for rape and murder.

“We were then promised with this conviction that he would be imprisoned for the rest of his life,” Chanel-Naomi’s mother told the newspaper. “That was important for processing, but also the knowledge that he could never do this to others again. To release him is insane.”
