The disappointing sixth rank in Bahrain turns the world upside down at Red Bull after the triumph in Japan. What will become of Max Verstappen?

The sixth place at the Bahrain Grand Prix for Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen was more than just a disappointing result. Red Bull not only had to struggle with the speed, but also with operational mistakes, including two failed pit stops.

Verstappen was surprised by the extent of the problems: “I didn’t expect such a race because basically everything that could go wrong.” The Dutchman in particular described the tire management and vehicle balance as large construction sites. He also made it clear: “The pit stops were a disaster.”

Statements that were worried about Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko. It is clear to him that a quick improvement is necessary – not only with regard to the World Cup, but also to keep Verstappen. “It is clear that we have to make progress,” says the Austrian at Sky. “We have to create a basis with which he can fight for the World Cup.” He also spoke of a “great concern” that Verstappen could otherwise leave Red Bull.

Sky expert Ralf Schumacher goes even further. He considers a change of Verapens to be very likely. “The fish is relatively cleaned,” he says with a view to the current situation. Only a clear progress-for example through updates at the European race in Imola in mid-May-can still reverse the impression. Red Bull is planning an extensive update package for this Grand Prix.

But there are still two races in front of it: the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia and the Grand Prix of Miami. If Verstappen also has no chance there, the frustration with the Dutch only greater.
