Record number of complaints filed by people on the do-not-call list | Domestic

Last year, 9,816 complaints were filed with the Federal Public Service Economy for unwanted commercial calls from people on the do-not-call list. This list offers the option of no longer receiving advertising calls from companies that engage in direct marketing. “The system is overshooting its target,” says N-VA MP Anneleen Van Bossuyt.

In total, the list contained approximately 1,542,015 people on January 1, 2024. Of these, 9,816 filed a complaint, according to the figures requested from Van Bossuyt. This is a record number since the start of the do-not-call list in 2015.

“Anyone who registers has no guarantee not to be harassed,” says Van Bossuyt. “Operators are required to inform their users (…) that they can object to the use of their number for marketing purposes.” But that is not enough, reports Van Bossuyt. “The problem is that companies do not comply with the list.”

Van Bossuyt opts for an “opt-in system”, where you must explicitly indicate that you want to receive advertising calls from companies.
