Timo Werner waves the return to the RB Leipzig squad after 641 days. Coach Ole Werner promised a nomination of the ex-national player at the press conference before the duel with 1. FC Köln on Saturday (6:30 p.m.). The red bull is missing seven professionals and this opens a door for the 29 -year -old attacker.

“We will wait for the final training before we put together the squad, but the probability is relatively high. If you count through that, it could result in it,” said coach Werner on Thursday with a view of the 57-time international, who should have been sold in summer. Sports director Marcel Schäfer recently confirmed that Werner was suggested to a transfer. In the meantime, he is said to have stood shortly before a switch to Leipzig’s sister club New York Red Bulls. However, the deal failed due to the high salary demands of the striker, who came back to the Bundesliga from FC Chelsea in the summer of 2022 for 20 million euros.

Werner, who had gone to London two years earlier and won the Champions League there for 53 million euros, was paid for this step. He should earn around 10 million euros in Leipzig until his end of 2026 – more than twice as much as any other professional in the squad.

Timo Werner last almost two years ago in RB Leipzig’s squad

Most recently, Werner sat on the RB bank on December 19, 2023 near Leipzig’s away game in Bremen (1-1). He was then awarded to Tottenham Hotspur for a year and a half, where he was directly involved in ten goals in 41 games and his market value dropped from 17 million to EUR 7 million. It is the lowest rating during his time in Leipzig that when he changed 23 million from VfB Stuttgart to RB in summer 2016, it was rated at 8 million euros. His last use for the red bulls dates from December 13, 2023 (2-1 against Young Boys).

At the 1-0 in Mainz last Saturday, Xaver Schlager (27) and Antonio Nusa (22) had wandered injuries. Schlager suffered a muscle injury in the calf, he was “not available for the time being,” said the Leipzig. Nusa had to be operated on after a break in the right forearm. Now Max Finkgräfe (21) has suffered a knee injury in preparation for the Cologne game. “It is always a shame when a player is missing. But that doesn’t mean that it has to look worse at the weekend when other boys are there who have been waiting for their chance and have justified it in the past,” said coach Werner, who won six points with RB from the first three games.
