RB wants to “get continuity”
RB Leipzig’s managing director Oliver Mintzlaff took the pressure off the new coach Marco Rose in view of the tough opening program. “Even if we start with two losses, I won’t talk about a crappy start in the mixed zone,” said the 47-year-old on Thursday. With those words, Mintzlaff commented on the season opener of Domenico Tedesco, who was released on Wednesday and started with two draws.

Rose’s first opponents as RB coach are Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, Real Madrid on Wednesday and finally Borussia Mönchengladbach. Mintzlaff emphasized that he had “no expectations for the three games. We weren’t looking for a fireman, but a coach who would get the quality out of the team that it has.” They wanted to “get the continuity” that once distinguished the club. After all, Rose is the third coach in less than a year.
Rose took the reunion with his former clubs calmly. “It’s not about when the time is right for me to look good,” said the 45-year-old. The first task is to regain stability in your own game through activity. Already at the weekend after Leipzig’s 0: 4 in Frankfurt there was the first contact between Mintzlaff and Rose, on Tuesday evening it became acute after the 1: 4 against Donetsk.
RB Leipzig already had doubts about Tedesco in the second half of the season – Rose is hoping for Eberl
But there were doubts about Tedesco, who signed on in Leipzig in December 2021, much earlier, as Mintzlaff revealed. The separation was “not an easy decision”, after all, the native Italian won the first title in the club’s history with RB in the DFB Cup. “He has achieved great things with our young club. He deserves great respect and thanks,” says Mintzlaff. “But we already felt at the end of the second half of the season that the development we were hoping for was not there.”
Tedesco and his predecessors: RB Leipzig’s coach after scoring
The RB boss specified: “The attractiveness and dynamics were missing in our game. The last few games have been difficult – and the negative trend has continued. We took what we learned from the past seasons with us – and acted accordingly.” It was “a happy coincidence” that Rose, who was born in Leipzig, “was now available and agreed at such short notice. He is a perfect fit because he is very congruent with our basic goals.”
Rose also endorsed the effort for the designated sports director Max Eberl, with whom RB Leipzig is currently negotiating. “I would be happy if that worked. I know how it works, how it works,” Rose said. The new coach had already worked with Eberl for two years in Mönchengladbach.
“I know the city, the club, the squad quality. The structures and people here are great – everything you need is there and everyone here is an absolute professional. I’m looking forward to meeting the guys afterwards and getting to work straight away,” Rose said, looking at his new team. “The squad is very balanced with a high level of performance – but not particularly large. It will be exciting to see how we get through the next intense weeks. The advantage is that there will be fewer dissatisfied players.”
