RB Leipzig: Coach Marco Rose was in contact with Max Eberl

Ex-Gladbach duo

The new RB Leipzig coach, Marco Rose, has never lost close contact with Max Eberl since leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2021 and would welcome a renewed collaboration with the former sports director of the “foals”. “At the end of the day we believe that we can work well together,” said the 45-year-old on “Sky” on Saturday before his first game with the Saxons against Borussia Dortmund.

RB wants to hire Eberl as the new head of sports, when Rose had already asked about the personnel when he took office, he made no secret of his connection to the 48-year-old, who managed the fortunes of the Lower Rhine between October 2008 and January 2022 before he took his break for personal reasons announced by the football business.

Under Eberl, Borussia has spent 295 million euros on the transfer market since the summer of 2009 and earned 218 million euros in the same period. Due to the club’s massive sporting crisis last winter, Eberl, whose work was highly valued for many years, was also criticized. Before the season, he had brought Adi Hütter from Eintracht Frankfurt for 7.5 million euros to succeed Marco Rose, whose early departure from Gladbach to Borussia Dortmund had already led to discord.

RB Leipzig: New coach Marco Rose confirms meeting with Max Eberl

Speculations about a return to the Bundesliga for the native of Bogener had picked up speed in the summer when the TV channel “Sky” first reported on talks between Eberl and RB. “I would be happy if that worked. I know how it works, how it works. Regardless of that, I always exchanged ideas with Max, we also met in the summer. I visited him in Zurich to see how he was doing,” Rose said. According to Rose, Eberl had nothing to do with his move to Leipzig. “Of course I was in contact with Max at the end, but I held the talks with the club because Max isn’t here yet,” said Rose.

RB managing director Oliver Mintzlaff had recently emphasized several times that the Saxons and Eberl were not that far together. “I can deny everything that has been written. I can deny that we have an agreement with Max Eberl. We are in talks with a candidate, but have not yet come to an agreement,” he said a few weeks ago. At RB, Eberl would follow Markus Krösche, who had left Leipzig for Eintracht Frankfurt.
