RB Leipzig and Liverpool end Fábio Carvalho’s loan early

Two weeks after denial

Liverpool FC and RB Leipzig have agreed to terminate Fábio Carvalho’s loan. As both clubs officially confirmed on New Year’s Eve, the 21-year-old offensive player will return to the Reds with immediate effect. Just two and a half weeks ago, sports director Rouven Schröder denied such a scenario. “He will get more playing time,” and breaking off the loan was “not an issue,” it was said at the time. They want “the boy to bite”.

The transfer, which was actually designed to last twelve months, will not be remembered as a success by the parties involved. In 15 games (3 times in the starting line-up), the Portuguese remained without a goal for the Saxons. Instead of a new chance in the second half of the season, Carvalho will probably be loaned out to another club. He still has a contract in Liverpool until 2027.

Leipzig is unlikely to sign a replacement for Carvalho. “Sport Bild” denied a report about Ángel Alarcón from FC Barcelona on Sunday. With Eljif Elmas, the January transfer period for the third-placed Bundesliga player has been completed on the access side.
