Michael Eugene Archer, better known as R&B and neo-soul singer D’Angelo, died on Tuesday at the age of 51 from cancer. His family confirms this The New York Times.

D’Angelo rose to fame in the 1990s. He broke through in 1995 with the record Brown Sugar. With his innovative R&B music and a bare-chested music video, he was briefly a sensation in the music world, after which he almost completely disappeared from the world stage.

After 2000, he disappeared from view for fourteen years, with drink and drug problems. He went to rehab several times and, after fourteen years of absence, made a comeback in 2014 with the album Black Messiah. He won a total of four Grammys, including for Voodoo and Black Messiah.
