For a year, the Derpers, residents of Egmond aan Zee, struggled with flooding lankies. It was no longer possible to grow vegetables in the small, sheltered fields in the dunes. The garden sheds and other items were destroyed or damaged by the high water. “There are 340 dune lands here and therefore about a thousand people involved,” says Peter Stam of Duinlandjesvereniging De Noord.
For many Egmonders it is more than just gardening; it is a meeting place. “It is cultural heritage and the atmosphere here is unique. We do everything we can to preserve that,” says Stam.
In addition to the dune lands, we also had to go holiday homes to pay for it. The houses were flooded and pumping out water did not help.
