‘Rain of lights’ for deceased Matt and Pepijn at RKC Waalwijk

The young football players Matt and Pepijn, players of the 15th team of RKDVC Drunen, will be commemorated on Wednesday evening during the RKC match against Heracles. They died in an accident on Saturday. Matt and Pepijn are commemorated in minute 18 with a ‘rain of flashlights’, followed by applause and the singing of the song You’ll never walk Alone. The supporters’ association RKCNu, parents and teammates of the boys organized this.

Flynn van Mook, teammate of Matt and Pepijn, is one of the teammates involved in Wednesday evening’s tribute at RKC. “Our team also includes a few avid RKC fans and the idea for a tribute arose very spontaneously. In addition to shining the lights from our phones, we will also be unveiling a banner,” Flynn said. “It says: Rest in peace Matt and Pippin.”

The chairman of RKDVC Drunen, Hans Brokx, says that a tribute is also being organized at the boys’ own club. “The team and therefore the entire association, will commemorate Matt and Pepijn with their own game on May 22. Matt and Pepijn’s team then plays a match against another specially composed team.”

“The team will play in specially designed shirts.”

“The team will play in specially designed shirts,” he continues. “It will be a commemorative match in which we have called on all (senior) teams to come and watch as spectators. First impressions are that it will be very busy. It should be a tribute to the boys.”

The condolence register on the football club’s website now contains more than seven hundred messages. The club has also, in consultation, put the boys’ mourning cards online. “Pepijn’s funeral will be in Breda on Friday,” said Brokx. “A day later, parents, family, friends and team members say goodbye to Matt. His farewell service will be held in the auditorium of the Vlijmen-Nieuwkuijk crematorium.”

“It is a memoriam to which the team also contributed.”

On behalf of the 15th team of RKDVC, Flynn van Mook has written an impressive tribute about the death of teammates Matt and Pepijn. “Occasionally they could also be very annoying. But always in such a way that you eventually had to laugh. The most unusual stickers on WhatsApp, the most annoying jokes in the dressing room and the most absurd actions at parties. You could do it. leave it to the boys,” he writes. “Up there they are two more atmosphere creators, here we fill the large voids left behind with the way of life they have transferred to us for years. Matt and Pep. You are forever in our hearts.”
