“Work is underway, but the store is open as usual,” says Jiska Kazius of rail manager ProRail. While a completely new platform with passenger facilities is being constructed along track 3, the trains to and from Emmen and Zwolle continue to run.
Coevorden station is being renovated for the arrival of the new passenger train connection to Germany. A new platform for the trains of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn will be built on the Holwert side between the restored Van Gend & Loos warehouse.
Kazius is ProRail’s project leader for the new international, but also regional train connection Coevorden-Bad Bentheim, which should start running from December 13. “The trains of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn do not fit at the current center platform, because that is where the Arriva trains stop and depart. We are therefore building a new platform for the Bentheimer trains.”
This means that trains to and from Germany, to Emmen and to Zwolle can all be at Coevorden station at the same time.
“In principle, the train to and from Germany will always pass platform 3, but we will equip all tracks at Coevorden station with German train protection, so that the Bentheimer Eisenbahn can also pass platform 1 and 2 if necessary,” says Kazius.
A lift is also being built, so that it is easier to transfer from the German train to the Arriva trains and vice versa via the tunnel under the station.
