Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson released his interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations on October 6th. The artist, who dedicated himself to the famous German composer’s pieces in 2018, has already spent “25 years […] dreamed of recording this work,” he writes in a recent press release.
“As with some of Bach’s other large-scale works, I tended to see it as a majestic, commanding cathedral of music, imposing in its architecture and richly detailed in its design. Today I find another image more appropriate: the image of a mighty oak tree, no less imposing, but organic, alive and dynamic, with flexible, renewable forms, with leaves constantly unfolding to provide musical oxygen through a metaphysical, time-manipulating photosynthesis to produce for her admirers,” says Ólafsson about the work.
Starting in October 2023, the pianist’s international tour will see the sounds of the classic piece fill some of the world’s largest concert halls – including the Philharmonie de Paris, New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Southbank Center in London. Víkingur Ólafsson also plays in 13 German cities.
