Radical conversion? Gladbach observes offensive trio

Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach could appear on the offensive next season with a completely new face. According to a media report, Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus is closely monitoring three players who could replace an existing trio.

After the surprising departure of Max Eberl, the new strongman at Gladbach, Roland Virkus, has his hands full. According to information from “Sport Bild”, three players are to be sold in the summer, whose contracts will end in 2023. These are Marcus Thuram, Breel Embolo and Alassane Pléa.

The three offensive players have shown acute fluctuations in their performance this season, but they are all top earners and, due to their contractual situation, can only bring in the transfer fee so necessary for the club in the summer. Although Thuram, Embolo and Pléa were responsible for seven of the last eight Gladbach goals, an end seems inevitable.

So it’s no wonder that Virkus is already looking elsewhere for a replacement. According to the report, the 55-year-old also looked at a trio that is active in the Bundesliga competition or in the 2nd Bundesliga. Like Daniel Kyereh, who impresses with strong performances at FC St. Pauli, who are aspiring for promotion. His contract runs until 2023. If the Kiez-Klub misses the leap into the top floor, Kyereh should aim for the Bundesliga and Gladbach could be a possible option for the attacking midfielder.

Gladbach wants coveted Maina

In addition to Kyereh, Linton Maina is currently still playing in the lower house. At Hannover 96, however, he has long since proven his suitability for the Bundesliga, where he was already active for the 96ers from 2017 to 2019. As “Sport Bild” reports, Virkus has already personally seen Maina’s performance and watched the winger at Lower Saxony’s guest appearance at Schalke.

Maina’s contract ends after the season, so he would be available on a free transfer. In addition to Gladbach, Hertha BSC, RB Leipzig and Mainz 05 are also vying for the 22-year-old, who wants to change.

The most experienced of the bunch is probably Alfred Finnbogason from FC Augsburg. Like Maina, the striker is a free transfer and knows the league very well. In the current season, the 33-year-old was injured for a long time, but still scored two goals in almost 200 minutes of play and also collected an assist.

The veteran could provide the good mix in Gladbach that Virkus is aiming for, who not only thinks about young talents, but also wants to equip the team with experienced stars.
