Mathys Tel missed a penalty in the European Supercup. After the game, he was badly insulted on social media.

After the lost Supercup final against Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham striker Mathys Tel experienced racist hostility in social networks. The club reacted with clear words – and announced consequences.

“We are horrified by the racist insults that Mathys Tel received on social media last night after the defeat in the UEFA supercup,” said Tottenham the day after the game. Previously, the Champions League winner PSG defeated the Europa League winner in Udine 4: 3 in a penalty shootout. Tel, who used to play at FC Bayern, had awarded a penalty.

In his statement, the English club emphasized that Tel showed “courage and courage when he started to shoot a penalty”. However, according to Tottenham, those who then insulted him are “nothing more than cowards” who would hide behind anonymous user names to spread their “hideous views”.

Tottenham announced that it is legally against everyone who can be identified. For this they want to work with the responsible authorities and the platform operators. Again and again black footballers become victims of racist attacks – both online and in the stadium.
