Queen Silvia remembers the early days of their relationship: Hiding in the bush

Queen Silvia gets to speak in a new documentary made in honor of her 80th birthday.

Queen of Sweden Silvia turned 80 on Saturday, December 23. In honor of the anniversary, a two-part documentary series has been made about the queen Silvia – Mitt liv som Drottning (Silvia – Queen of my life), which premieres on Swedish television on Christmas Day.

Expressen says that the documentary remembers, among other things, Silvia and the king Karle XVI Gustav the early days of the relationship. In the documentary, Silvia, Kaarle Kustaa and the king’s sister, the princess, can be heard Bridget.

Silvia and the then crown prince met in 1972 at the Munich Olympics. For the first few years, the couple met each other in secret.

In the documentary, Silvia recalls one time when she heard a car approaching and thought the press had found her.

– I jumped into the bush and went into hiding, the queen recalls with a laugh.

Birgitta also remembers having to hide Silvia when she was visiting them.

Silvia and Kaarle Kustaa got married on June 19, 1976. In the documentary, the king reveals how the day in question came to be.

– We simply looked at the weather calendar. It seemed like the safest day for the weather, Kaarle Kustaa laughs.

In the documentary, the king is shown a video from the wedding day.

– It was a wonderful experience. The fact that Sweden had a new queen, Kaarle Kustaa says with emotion.

In the documentary, Silvia also reflects on her 80 years of age.

– This is a strange situation. I don’t feel like I’m 80 years old. But I don’t feel like I’m 40–50 years old either, Silvia reflects.

– Thank God I’m fine, my health is fine. 80 years is an incredible number, the queen says in the documentary.
