Qatar vs. Ecuador: Media – World Cup in Qatar starts a day earlier

In order for hosts Qatar to get their opening game, the World Cup should start one day earlier than planned.

As the AFP news agency reported with reference to sources from the World Cup organization, the winter tournament is now scheduled to begin on November 20th. The British sports portal “The Athletic” also reports on it.

Previously, the official “opening game” between the hosts and Ecuador was scheduled for November 21, but the first World Cup game would have been Senegal against the Netherlands on the same day. England-Iran would also have been played before the official opening.

Internal communications from the Qatar World Cup organizing committee suggest that reporting on exploitative working conditions on World Cup construction sites should be prevented. Meanwhile, human rights organizations are reiterating their criticism.

According to AFP, the world football association FIFA and Qatar themselves have approved the request of the World Cup organizing committee to bring the game forward. The decision still has to be approved by the Executive Committee of the FIFA Council, wrote “The Athletic”. However, approval is expected. The final of the finals will be played at Lusail Iconic Stadium on December 18th. The Bundesliga goes into the World Cup break on November 13th.
