The 71-year-old president, who has been in power for almost a quarter of a century, announced in December that he wanted to run for re-election in the elections that will take place from March 15 to 17.

The election is seen as a formality for Putin. The opposition has been virtually eradicated and since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, the repression of critical voices has increased even further.

Opponent Boris Nadezhdin is still trying to have his candidacy declared valid, which has generated unexpected interest in recent weeks. Tens of thousands of Russians have signed so that Nadezhdin can register for the elections.

The politician, who is little known to the general public, has already stated that he has few illusions about the outcome of the elections, but that he hopes they would herald the “beginning of the end” of the Putin era.

If Putin is elected, he could remain in power until 2036 thanks to a constitutional amendment.
