The new school year has already started again and that means extra crowds in traffic. Pupils from De Schuthoek primary school in Hoogeveen therefore receive traffic lessons, organized by transport insurer TVM. In addition, the main part is the blind spot.
According to Linda Zijlstra, prevention advisor at TVM, more attention is needed for the dangers of the blind spot. “We did research and last year it turned out that there were 110 accidents in the Netherlands where people died or injured personal injury.” And that is why information is a good start to young lives, the insurer thinks.
Ronalt Vrieling has been hired with his education agency to catch up with the children about the blind spot. There is a large truck in front of the Schuthoek, in turn children can take a seat in the vehicle and stand next to it.
“A blind spot is the place where the driver cannot see you,” says student Anna. “We are now walking around the truck to see where the blind corners are,” adds fellow student Luan.
According to Vrieling, getting training is important. “These are students in groups 6, 7 and 8, who go to secondary education fairly quickly and will often go into traffic independently. Teaching a bit of awareness and safety is important, because you don’t want any accidents.”
Zijlstra also sees the benefits. “More and more often you see people with telephones and headphones in traffic. At a young age you can show the risks of it. Everyone is benefiting from that.”
Anna is determined to pay more attention to traffic. Luan also: “I used to think I could pass it, while there was no room anymore. Then I thought: PFEW, I had that again. That is actually not good.”
