Recently there were rumors that the band was back in the studio. So: new label, new album?
The new wave of Britpop shows no signs of slowing down: Pulp have announced their signing with Rough Trade Records. After the band recently played new songs live, a new label now strongly suggests a comeback for the group from Sheffield.
The rumors about new material could come true
In a statement on Thursday (December 12), the band said: “Rough Trade has managed Pulp for over 30 years, so it feels great to finally be with this label. We did it!” The connection between the group and the music company has existed since the 1990s. However, Pulp were most recently signed to Island Records, which belongs to Universal Music. There the formation around frontman Jarvis Cocker released their current album WE LOVE LIFE from 2001 in 2001.
The band, which was founded in 1978, then took a break. Between 2002 and 2011 the combo became quiet, then they played a few concerts together again. In 2013, the first reunion ended with a show in Sheffield, which was also captured in a documentary.
New songs – live for some time now
Ups and downs – almost ten years would pass before Cocker announced the reunion again in 2022 and brought the band together. Only this time there wasn’t just a nostalgic look back at the old classics: During their US tour in September 2024, Pulp surprised fans with new songs like “Farmer’s Market”, “Spike Island” and “A Sunset” – almost an EP .
It is still uncertain whether the collaboration with the new record company actually means a new album. It is also not known whether the previous discography will be reissued again. However, there are some indications that Pulp is currently letting off steam creatively again. In August this year, fans ran into Jarvis Cocker on the street in London with a bright orange Rough Trade Records bag slung over his shoulder. He is said to have already said during this encounter that he and his colleagues were back in the studio.
