PSV’s winning streak ends in Utrecht’s Galgenwaard

PSV’s wonderful winning streak in the Eredivisie came to an end on Sunday. Against FC Utrecht in De Galgenwaard stadium, the Eindhoven team did not take full advantage for the first time in the eighteenth round of the competition. The match ended 1-1.

Just like the PSV from the 1987/1988 season, the Eindhoven team suffered their first loss of points in the Eredivisie in the eighteenth round. Both teams continue to share the record of seventeen consecutive victories since the start of the competition.

For the PSV from the 1987/1988 season led by Guus Hiddink, FC Twente (2-2) was the stumbling block at the time. For the current PSV, which would have been the record holder with an eighteenth win in a row, the match in the Galgenwaard in Utrecht proved to be the stumbling block.

Given the game pattern and the chances, the home team had the best claim to three points, although PSV was still close to a stolen victory thanks to a shot on Hirving Lozano’s crossbar.

On the edge
FC Utrecht wanted to show that there was nothing to be gained in De Galgenwaard. The edge was pushed to the limit and sometimes over it, with Luuk de Jong in particular being the victim of a number of violations. PSV was forced to counter and did so successfully. After just seven minutes, left back Sergino Dest delivered a turning cross that was quite simply placed with his head against the net by teammate Bakayoko: 0-1.

The Eindhoven team did not succeed much in terms of football. Especially in the final phase, former PSV player Sam Lammers asserted himself as the new striker of FC Utrecht. His first shot with the right went wide, shortly afterwards his effort with the left was tapped over the bar by goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

Storm Isha was announced later on this Sunday, but PSV previously experienced heavy weather in De Galgenwaard. In the second half, FC Utrecht pressed the accelerator. The rightful equalizer came in the 53rd minute. Othmane Boussaid saw space and shot home a cross from the right flank: 1-1

The 2-1 hung in the air, but it was Lozano on the other side with the best chance of the match. The Mexican’s shot bounced off the crossbar into the hands of goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas. Bosz hoped to force victory with substitutes Ricardo Pepi and Noa Lang, but it no longer became really dangerous. A hard-working FC Utrecht held firm and thus prevented a new chapter for PSV in the history books.
