PSV’s championship chances are hanging by a thread, says René van de Kerkhof

The derby against RKC Waalwijk resulted in an away win for PSV for the first time in months. But that’s about all, for the Van de Kerkhof brothers. René in particular is extremely critical of his club, in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant. “The first half was already not great. And in the second half you can be happy that RKC does not score because then the fence is over again. The championship chances are really hanging by a thread.”

It is certainly not the first time that PSV has made it difficult for itself in an away match. “At the bottom three clubs in the ranking you just get fucked,” says René. “That should never happen to PSV. Maybe they think about it too easily.”

It doesn’t have to be the players’ fault, he thinks. “We have a very good team, but I think it’s all in the mind. Take that header that almost went in. There are three men watching and only one heads. And that’s that of RKC (Michael Kramer, ed.). He could have gone right in.”

Brother Willy is a bit more positive than René. “I thought the first half was good. Fortunately, we also get to 1-0 and then you expect them to go over it in the second half, but that doesn’t happen. But for me the result comes first. You take three points .”

Next week the gate closer Cambuur awaits. “We still have something to put right against that club,” says René. “But that can also be a difficult game.”

“If only we had been tougher.”

In the podcast, the brothers also reminisce about keeper Jan van Beveren, who would have turned 75 on Sunday. A new book has been published about him. “It was great playing with the Beef”, says Willy with a smile on his face. “You could let the opponent shoot at goal, Jan got it anyway.”

But there is also regret: “If only we had been harder on him. That he should have worried less about Johan Cruijff because that cost him his career.”

The brothers also talk about the cup tournament, the forced return of Joël Drommel and Luuk de Jong’s decision to put an end to his international career.
