PSV won 6-1 on Sunday afternoon on a visit to Excelsior. Without playing too big it was an easy game. With that, the club from the Lichstad partly washed away the hangover from the elimination in the Champions League.

PSV managed to end a dramatic week on a positive note. In a few days, the team was eliminated from the Champions League and Luuk de Jong dropped out with an injury. Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team managed to take revenge against Excelsior. It was an easy match in Rotterdam.

Less than 90 seconds had been played and the first Eindhoven goal was already a fact. A deflected corner was shot in very controlled by Joey Veerman. It was a nice introduction to the artificial grass in Kralingen.

Moderate but effective
PSV that started the match with some changes, André Ramalho and Erick Gutíerrez were sacrificed by Van Nistelrooij. Their replacements were Xavi Simons and Phillipp Mwene. Johan Bakayoko played in the front instead of De Jong.

But PSV didn’t sparkle with all these changes either. It played at a slow pace. It also escaped the equalizer a number of times. Philipp Max, for example, got his goalkeeper in trouble with a back pass that was too short.

However, it was PSV that eventually went further. Ibrahim Sangaré headed in the 2-0 from a corner. Just before half time it was the Ivorian again. He was able to process a cross into a goal.

Not the zero again
After the break, the Eindhoven club rumbled on. It had very little to fear from Excelsior. The PhD student had to allow the visitors to quickly reach 0-5. Simons and Gakpo were also allowed to take their goal. Apart from the sloppy game, there was one more point of attention. PSV cannot keep a clean sheet this season. Again it didn’t work out because Siebe Horemans was allowed to score the 1-5 from a corner. Xavi Simons put the final score of 1-6 on the scoreboard.

In terms of score, PSV gave the only correct answer after Wednesday’s debacle. The Eindhoven team were eliminated by Rangers in the preliminary round of the Champions League.

In terms of game, there is still a lot of profit to be made. Especially given that the traditionally difficult away game against FC Twente awaits. PSV will first play at home against FC Volendam on Wednesday. A few days later, the match awaits in Enschede.
