PSV not yet sure of second place after misstep against Heerenveen

PSV drew 3-3 against sc Heerenveen. As a result, it opens the battle for second place completely again. With a win, the Eindhoven team would have been certain of at least a preliminary round of the Champions League. Now she still has to work hard in the last round to secure second place.

Winning at home against SC Heerenveen would be enough to reach that goal on Sunday. It certainly wasn’t as easy as that sounds.

Still, PSV started strongly and took the lead early through a header from Ibrahim Sangaré. But after that 1-0 lead, the home team fell asleep. She went at a slow pace looking for a second hit, otherwise it was just barking.

Van Ewijk
Biting SC Heerenveen did. Twice even and for that it was Milan van Ewijk to thank. The right back is in fact in the interest of the Eindhoven club and it was he who had a large share in the 1-1 and 1-2.

First he managed to take advantage of a gigantic mistake by André Ramalho who couldn’t get the ball under control. Van Ewijk then pushed the ball past PSV’s keeper Walter Benítez in a controlled manner. In the injury time of the first half, the defender was responsible for the 1-2 of the Frisians. The scorer was Antoine Colassin, who also finished quietly.

Comeback comes too late
Even after the break, PSV showed very mediocre results. In fact, after 57 minutes Osame Sahraoui had the 3-1 on his shoe. Sangaré saved the Eindhoven team with a toe. A minute later there was nothing more to save for the home team. It was again Colassin who scored for the visitors. He shoved in the 3-1 with a dry bang.

The Eindhoven team seemed dependent on Ajax. At that time, the competitor for second place had not progressed further than a 1-1 score against FC Utrecht. PSV was still second in that position. But the 2-1 in Amsterdam ensured that PSV really had to win. More than ten minutes before the end, Luuk de Jong did something back by heading in the 2-3. PSV still had to score twice to succeed. With five minutes left on the clock, the ball hit the spot. Xavi Simons took advantage of the golden opportunity and brought PSV completely back into the game.

PSV still needed one goal. It was alive again. However, it had woken up too late, so that second place is suddenly at stake again. Next week, an unprecedented apotheosis awaits in the last round of the Eredivisie. PSV then needs a point at AZ. Ajax must win at FC Twente to possibly catch up with PSV. AZ can still finish third, then it must win in turn to catch up with Ajax.
