A protest march from Extinction Rebellion was traveled by Assen this morning. On the way to Koopmansplein, the procession was temporarily stopped when someone tried to take a banner.
A man was clearly not happy with the demonstration. He stood in front of the march pontifically and pulled the canvas on which ‘bulb cultivation poison -free’. However, the demonstrators did not let go and after some cursing and raging the man dripped off.
From the station, the demonstrators went to the center of Assen from ten o’clock. Speeches were planned there. The protesters are against the use of chemical agents in bulb growing. They blame the province of Drenthe that it does too little against substance use in bulb cultivation, despite judicial judgments. They want the province to come into action.
“Drenthe is champion lily cultivation. While all the signals for nature, drinking water and our health are on red,” says Ellen Smal of Extinction Rebellion. “More and more people are concerned about the extinction of insects and about their health. The march offers everyone the chance to express those worries and to show that we no longer accept this.”
The return trip to the station was started around noon.
