Many supermarkets are playing the zero waste card. They give substantial discounts on products that are about to expire in order to minimize loss. As a result, you can make impressive bargains. “The topic is very popular in our community this week,” says Gunther Devisch, admin of Promoters Belgium. This resulted in hundreds of responses a post from Sam who told how he bought guinea fowl at Lidl for 0.50 euros instead of 12.50 euros.

“I immediately took four pieces with me,” he added.

According to Gunther Lidl meat, packaged lettuce, … which decays to -30 percent the day after. “The discount is even greater for what expires the same day,” he says. “You get yogurt and packaged salads for 0.20 euros, and meat, cakes and pastries for prices between 0.50 euros and 1 euros.”

“Some stores make boxes of three kilograms of fruit and vegetables with a stain on them or offer boxes of biscuits whose outer packaging is damaged, but the inner one is not. They go for 1 euro. The boxes are usually there from 6 pm. The exact size of the discount depends on the store,” he says. “A maximum of five products are given per person to give everyone a chance.”

Andrea also has a good tip. She herself worked at Lidl early on. “I usually buy a load of gourmet dishes in early December. Then you can buy them at 1 euro per dish.” Store in the freezer.

Also at supermarket chain Jumbo there are bargains to be had, according to Promojager Gerdie. “I bought 400 grams of salmon fillet for 4 euros instead of 9.59 euros, two Angus burgers for 2.50 euros instead of 4.49 euros and three packs of Irish pepper roast beef for 3 euros instead of 8 euros. The filet americain was 1 euro,” she says a popular post on the Facebook channel of the Promojagers.

According to Gunther, you will find Jumbo’s zero-waste products in a special less-waste bin. “The store itself decides whether to participate and when exactly the products are discounted,” he says.

Besides Lidl and Jumbo prices too Delhaize and Carrefour off products. “These are discounts of up to 50 percent,” says Gunther.
