Bucharest (dpa -AFX) – In the decisive runoff election for the presidential office in Romania, the liberal conservative and pro -European candidate Nicusor Dan lies, according to forecasts due to voter surveys. Dan has between 54.1 and 54.9 percent, his right-wing populist competitor George Simion between 45.1 and 45.9 percent, reported the TV station “Digi24” and the news portal “G4Media.ro” shortly after the polling stations were closed, citing opinion research institutes Curs and Avangard.
Partial count results will be published in the course of the evening. At the first round of the presidential election in early May, the final result was determined the morning after.
Romania’s opinion research institutes had recently underestimated the chances of candidate Simion. In addition, voters who live abroad were not asked about the election. In the past, these had decided in the past in narrow circumstances. According to the central electoral office, their turnout on Sunday was about twice as high as in the first round on May 4. 60 percent of the abroad ranks were voted for Simion – so that he cut off 20 percentage points more than among the voters in Germany.
