The Toboggan World Cup starts the new season in Winterberg. Because of the problems with the converted bobsleigh and toboggan run in Innsbruck-Igls, the start of the Olympic season was moved to the Sauerland from December 5th to 7th, as the World Toboggan Federation FIL announced.

“The second homologation date for the converted Olympic ice track in Innsbruck-Igls was not successful. Despite intensive rework in the past few days, the track was not able to fully meet the technical requirements of the International Luge Federation (FIL).”said in a statement.

Problems in two corners

After a failed test drive by two-time toboggan world champion Jonas Müller, the Austrians refrained from further tests for safety reasons. In particular, curves 13 and 14, which were narrowed with additional wooden barriers, cause problems.

“Winterberg’s willingness to step in within a few days is a strong sign of solidarity in our toboggan family”said FIL President Einars Fogelis: “This solidarity shows what defines our sport.” The Toboggan World Cup will also be taking place in Winterberg in January.

“Will need more serious intervention”

The FIL hopes “That those responsible in Innsbruck-Igls push forward the necessary technical adjustments so that the traditional Tyrolean track can be homologated for international competitions as soon as possible”it said. “We know how important Innsbruck-Igls is for our sport – historically, emotionally and logistically for many teams. Our goal is clear: We want to return there as quickly as possible, as soon as the track meets all the requirements.”said Fogelis, referring to the 1964 and 1976 Olympic track.

The Austrian Toboggan Association (ÖRV) was skeptical on Friday and spoke of a “disaster”. “It will now require a more serious intervention, which of course raises a lot of questions, especially since it involves very high investments.”said ÖRV President Markus Prock.
