“private war”? TV Zoff between Kahn and Matthäus

The two former Munich captains Oliver Kahn and Lothar Matthäus delivered a verbal exchange of blows on the TV microphone before FC Bayern’s top Bundesliga game against BVB.

“I would ask you, Lothar, what do you actually mean by “Mia san Mia” when you always assume that there is no “Mia san Mia” anymore?” Asked the visibly annoyed Bayern boss Kahn ( 53) in the round of the TV channel “Sky”. “What exactly do you mean? You just always put it somewhere in the landscape – and then everyone can choose what that means.”

Matthäus had recently criticized the German record champions in his function as a Sky expert because of the separation from coach Julian Nagelsmann. The familial, protective self-image of Bayern, the “Mia san Mia”, was no longer there, “partially trampled on”, the record national player had judged.

On Saturday he replied to Kahn that he would not want a “private war”. “You can call me at any time,” said Matthäus (62), referring to his contacts at Bayern, with whom he speaks.

FC Bayern: Oliver Kahn defends separation from Julian Nagelsmann

“These aren’t arguments,” Kahn replied. “Watch out, maybe one or the other here suffers from transfiguration or distortion of memory. Even when we played, you can probably still remember that there were always decisions that weren’t easy.” The “insinuations that we would not maintain the style of FC Bayern, so I would be very, very careful there.”

Kahn again defended the manner in which Nagelsmann was separated and Thomas Tuchel’s commitment. How things went then was “a catastrophe”. But that was only because the information about Nagelsmann had been leaked to the media. “It certainly wasn’t from FC Bayern. (…) We’re not shooting ourselves in the foot,” said Kahn.

Bayern had announced the personal details on March 24, and the Nagelsmann separation had already been reported on the evening of March 23. The coach reportedly found out about his departure from the media. Kahn justified this by saying that Nagelsmann, who was on vacation, should be spoken to personally and “not on the phone”. Nagelsmann only drove up to the club center on Säbener Straße on March 24th.
