Prisoner dies of extreme neglect in US: “Eaten alive by insects” | Abroad

Lashawn Thompson, an inmate at Georgia’s Fulton County Jail, was found dead in his cell on September 22. According to lawyers representing the family, he was extremely neglected by prison staff. “He was eaten alive by insects,” the lawyers said.

Thompson had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had an infestation of lice and bed bugs when he died. Public records state that nothing was done to help his deteriorating condition.

The report by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell confirms that Thompson died suffering from dehydration, malnutrition, untreated schizophrenia and an insect infestation on his body. The doctor described the death as homicide.

“These autopsy findings confirm that Lashawn died from the extreme neglect of the Fulton County Jail and its staff. He was dehydrated, malnourished and his body was completely covered in insects. It is one of the most harrowing things we have ever seen.”

The family has decided to take legal action against the prison after the autopsy results confirmed their previous suspicions of neglect.

Need

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat stated at the time that it is no secret that the dilapidated conditions of the current facility make it difficult to provide a safe and healthy environment for the inmates and staff.

“Without making explicit statements about Mr. Thompson’s health, it is fair to say that this is one of many cases illustrating the need for comprehensive and better mental health care.”
