Princess Amalia with parents arrived on Bonaire for a two-week tour | show

with picturesTogether with her parents, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, Princess Amalia stepped out of the government plane on Bonaire this afternoon (local time). The visit of almost two weeks to the Antilles has officially started. The visit is designed to introduce the 19-year-old princess to all six individual islands.

At Bonaire International Airport, the royal party was met by a modest reception committee, without too much ceremonial hassle or protocols. This is called a so-called technical arrival. Bonaire ends on Saturday when the Oranjes visit just about every corner of the island. They are received by Island Governor Edison Rijna in the capital Kralendijk, after which a sensitive point is immediately on the agenda. At Witte Pan they visit ten remaining ‘slave huts’, where enslaved people – who worked in the salt production on the south side of the island – lived in the last years until the abolition of slavery in 1863.

King Willem-Alexander acted as co-pilot on the flight to Bonaire. It was not the first time that Princess Amalia was on board the PH-GOV, the government aircraft that is sometimes used to get the Oranges to their holiday address. After the visit to Bonaire, the group will fly to Aruba on Monday morning for a two-day tour of that island. The Oranges will be sailed to the largest island, Curaçao, on Wednesday by naval ship. From Monday 6 February, the princess and her parents are expected on the three windward islands: Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba.

Amalia, a first-year student of Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics, has been given time off from the University of Amsterdam for this special trip. The security measures on the islands will be – visible and invisible – great. Last autumn it became clear that the princess is under serious threat from the Mocromafia.
