Primavera Sound gives up its edition in Madrid in 2024

“In 2024 the festival will not be able to be held.” This has been announced by Primavera Sound this Friday that renounces its edition in Madrid next year after a stormy premiere in the Spanish capital this past June. It’s a statement, the festival affirms that it does not exist “to this day, in view of 2024, the city does not have a venue capable of hosting an event of our magnitude with guarantees and format in terms of public demands, production requirements and musical display”.

The premiere of Primavera Sound in Madrid was held in the Ciudad del Rock in Arganda del Rey, 40 kilometers from the center of the capital, and had to suspend its opening day due to “the adverse weather forecast.” Then, in a statement, he already stressed that “the persistent inclement weather” in recent weeks affected the pre-production of the appointment. In this Friday’s informative note, the organization indicates that “the external difficulties that the festival had to face in the final stretch of pre-production gave rise to one of the most complicated editions that Primavera Sound has ever had to face.” According to the organization, the festival brought together 90,000 people on the days of Friday and Saturday in which there were mobility problems, with large traffic jams at the gates of the City of Rock, and even delaying the start of the Depeche Mode concert, Friday’s headliners.

“As a consequence, despite the fact that the balance of the festival was more than satisfactory on a musical level, the expectations we had were not met and the experience of the public due to certain logistical aspects was not what was desired,” acknowledges Almudena Heredero, director of Primavera Sound Madrid, through the statement.

Despite everything, according to Alfonso Lanza, director of Primavera Sound, “we will continue to study the possibility of holding a Primavera Sound in Madrid because we maintain a continuous and constructive dialogue with the city’s institutions.” “There is a will to continue this relationship by all the parties involved, and the relationship with the city, which had already come a long way, has only strengthened in recent months. What there are, right now, are no guarantees to be able to offer a festival in 2024 that meets the quality standards that Primavera Sound usually offers. It has been a first edition from which we have drawn many lessons and we do not want to miss them for the future,” he added in the statement.
