Heavily loaded caravans or too little coolant: busy at Vakantiecheck

Just before you go on vacation, have the car checked. Nearly a hundred holidaymakers stopped at the Hazeldonk border crossing in Zundert on Friday morning. Roadside assistance René Nouws was there together with ANWB colleagues, caravan experts, Autotaalglas and Kwikfit to check cars, caravans and trailers. “Today, the most common problems we’ve come across are coolant or engine oil issues.”

“We can add another liter of engine oil!” René shouts from under a hood to his colleague. The owner of the car is behind the wheel and looks out the window: “That’s strange, I filled it up a month ago. I’m not going on vacation for another two weeks, but have it checked already.”

Roadside assistance René and his colleagues do not encounter any major problems. “What we most often encounter today are problems with the fluids, such as coolant or engine oil. These often have to be topped up. We also see a lot of contaminated brake fluid that should have been changed earlier.”

“At the moment it is very busy at the garages.”

After the liquids have been refilled, the holidaymakers are spoken to equally sternly. They are mainly very grateful that they could still come here. “People drive here especially for the check. At the moment it is also very busy at the garages, people still want to be able to go on holiday safely,” says René.

According to the ANWB, an overloaded caravan is also a common mistake. Almost all caravans that drive over the scale are too heavy. One caravan was even four hundred kilos too heavy. According to the caravan experts, the problem can easily be solved by moving some stuff to the car.

“It was a little bit heavier than it should be,” laughs a caravan owner. “Then we will immediately know for next year!” A total of 85 cars, 35 caravans, six trailers and one camper were checked.

“It can also go wrong close to home.”

And where are the holidays going? Germany, Croatia, Spain, France? “We’re staying in the Netherlands, to the province of Zeeland. That’s so handy,” laughs a pregnant woman while pointing to her belly. “It can also go wrong close to home. It’s good that you have the car checked,” says René soberly to her.
