Manchester United stayed in touch with the top flight of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over West Ham and overtook Chelsea. Thanks to the 100th goal by attacker Marcus Rashford in the jersey of the “Red Devils”, they moved up to 5th place in the table.
Chelsea had suffered a significant 4-1 loss in Brighton the day before and slipped down to 6th place. United’s gap to third-placed Tottenham is now just three points with a game in hand. Coach Erik ten Hag’s team, which also used Cristiano Ronaldo for the full 90 minutes in the league against the “Hammers” for the first time since August, extended their positive streak with the win and has been unbeaten in 8 games in all competitions.
Homegrown Rashford increased his personal season record to 10 goals in 15 games with the goal. According to the TM database, the 25-year-old is the 13th player in club history to break the 100-goal mark.
Only draw and dismissal for Kroos: Real fails against Girona
Real Madrid have struggled to defend their lead in the Spanish LaLiga. The Royals did not get beyond a 1-1 (0-0) against FC Girona on Sunday. Vinicius Júnior (70th minute) put the weak Madrilenians in the lead. Cristhian Stuani (80th) managed to equalize for the guests with a controversial hand penalty.
To make matters worse, Real’s ex-national player Toni Kroos had to leave the field in added time (90 + 1) because of repeated foul play with yellow and red. Real is only one point ahead of FC Barcelona, Barça had won 1-0 at FC Valencia on Saturday (to the table).
