Newcastle United are getting better and better in the English Premier League with Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw. The team of the two German national players won 2-1 (2-0) against Burnley FC thanks to a directly converted corner by captain Bruno Guimarães. The Magpies have managed to catch up with the upper midfield in the league and were in good shape before Wednesday’s Champions League appearance at Bayer Leverkusen.
Woltemade (11th minute) and Anthony Gordon (28th) could have put the hosts in the lead. Guimarães made sure of that with a stroke of genius: the Brazilian flicked a corner into the far corner to make it 1-0 (31′). After Burnley’s Lucas Pires was sent off (43′), Gordon increased the score to 2-0 with a hand penalty (45’+8). Zian Flemming’s goal came too late (90+4/hand penalty).
Premier League: Arsenal series ends in injury time
Aston Villa inflicted their first defeat in 18 competitive games on leaders Arsenal FC in stoppage time. Emiliano Buendía, who worked for Bayer Leverkusen last season, secured a 2-1 (1-0) win over the Gunners with his goal in the top duel in the Premier League. After their seventh competitive win in a row, Aston Villa consolidated third place with 30 points and is now only three points behind Arsenal.
Matty Cash scored for the hosts from Birmingham to make it 1-0 (36th). Leandro Trossard equalized for Arsenal (52′). Aston Villa then had several chances to make it 2-1, but were repeatedly denied by the strong Arsenal keeper David Raya. Buendia’s big performance came in stoppage time (90+5).
Manchester City and Pep Guardiola benefited from Arsenal FC’s second league defeat and were able to reduce the deficit to two points with a confident 3-0 (2-0) against strong newcomers FC Sunderland. Rúben Dias (31st) and Josko Gvardiol (35th) scored for superstar Erling Haaland’s team before the break. Rayan Cherki initiated Phil Foden’s third goal with a pass from Rabona (65th). Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien was shown a red card in stoppage time.
