Premier League, match results: Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton

The Blues drop to 11th place in the table after their fifth league defeat at Newcastle: successes also for Bournemouth, West Ham United and Luton Town

Francesco Calvi

After the draw between Manchester City and Liverpool, Arsenal wins at Brentford and takes top spot in the Premier League. Arteta’s team suffers against the Bees but in the end they passed thanks to a goal from the newly introduced Havertz in the 89th minute. In the afternoon, Chelsea collapsed, paying dearly for the errors of their defenders and, after an hour of balance, lost 4-1 against Newcastle. Brighton, however, beat Nottingham Forest (3-2): De Zerbi’s team went behind at the start, but then, despite two injuries, came back with Ferguson and Joao Pedro. West Ham (2-1 against Burnley), Luton Town (2-1 against Palace) and Bournemouth are also ok: against Sheffield, defeated 3-1, former Roma player Justin Kluivert scores the temporary 2-0 and becomes the third player in history with at least one goal in the five best European leagues.

Brentford-Arsenal 0-1

He doesn’t shine, he doesn’t convince, he comes close to defeat and yet he takes the top. With a bit of luck, Arsenal win at home Bees and takes first place in the rankings. THE Gunners they risk big due to the errors of Ramsdale, who in the first half gives the ball to Mbeumo two steps from the goal. The Brentford striker came close to taking the lead but his shot was blocked off the line by Rice. In the 42nd minute, Trossard put the Gunners ahead, but was in an offside position: from then on, Arteta’s team relied on the flashes of Saka, who often attempted a cross but never found well-positioned teammates in the center of the area. The pace drops in the first part of the second half, so the two coaches try to change the attack: Maupay and Nketiah replace Wissa and Gabriel Jesus. In the 77th minute Zinchenko was forced to make another save on the line after a header from Maupay. Arsenal are shaking, but they don’t give up. The decisive push still comes from the bench: Havertz, on the pitch since the 79th minute, is ready for Saka’s cross and surprises Flikken at the near post. In the 89th minute Arsenal are ahead and there is no time for Brentford to recover. Odegaard and his associates fly to the top of the Premier League table, +1 from City and +2 from Liverpool.

NEWCASTLE-CHELSEA 4-1

THE Magpies they win despite many injuries, after two thirds of the match marked by balance and missed goals. At St. James’ Park the Bianconeri field the trident of Almiron, Isak and Gordon, while Pochettino focuses on Palmer and Sterling alongside Nicolas Jackson. In the 13th minute Newcastle are already ahead with a goal from Isak, who runs on the edge of offside, in the 23rd minute Sterling equalizes the score with a magical free kick. The match is fun: after half an hour Joelinton devours a goal already scored, then Gallagher imitates him and Trippier hits the crossbar with a set shot.

Gordon on one side and Sterling on the other started continuous counterattacks, but in the 60th minute there was a blackout at Chelsea and Newcastle took a two-goal lead. Lascelles, left free in the penalty area, scored the 2-1 with a header in the 60th minute. A minute passes and Thiago Silva misses a back pass, sending Joelinton into the net. James’ expulsion in the 73rd minute (double yellow card) and Gordon’s final 4-1 condemned Pochettino’s team to defeat.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST-BRIGHTON 2-3

First he goes under, then he comes back and in the end he even risks getting caught again. Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton are back to winning ways after six rounds of the championship, but the success at Nottingham Forest is more difficult than ever. In the 3rd minute the opponents went ahead with a gore from Elanga and in the first half the Italian coach – already without Mitoma, Marsch, Welbeck and Milner due to injury – had to replace Ansu Fati and Lamptey, who were also struggling with physical problems. The 19-year-old Ferguson equalized the score in the 26th minute and, in added time in the first half, Joao Pedro – who replaced Ansu Fati – scored the 1-2. In the second half the Brazilian repeats his penalty, but in the 76th minute Nottingham wakes up. After a penalty foul committed by Hinshelwood, Dunk was sent off for protesting and Gibbs-White made it 2-3 from the spot. Brighton just had to protect their lead despite their numerical inferiority: mission accomplished.

SHEFFIELD UNITED-BOURNEMOUTH 1-3

Booed by their own fans, Sheffield remains stuck in third-to-last place in the table, +1 from Burnley and Everton, penalized and with one more match to play. Against Bournemouth, the match is one-sided. In the 12th minute Tavernier broke the deadlock with a central cut rewarded by a super Semenyo, elusive for the opponents when he started from the flank and aimed for the penalty area. Opportunities abound for the guests, especially in the first half. The calming goal came in the 3rd minute of injury time, when goalkeeper Foderingham lost the ball on the edge of the area and Kluivert hit an empty net. The former Roma player, just 24 years old, becomes the third player (after Raducioiu and Jovetic) with at least one goal scored in the top five European leagues. Before his sale to England, the Giallorossi had loaned him to Leipzig, Nice and Valencia. In the second half Tavernier closes the score with a touch in front of the net: McBurnie’s 1-3 in the 97th minute is of no use, because Bournemouth wins and flies to +7 on the red zone of the table.

BURNLEY-WEST HAM 1-2

Without the injured Bowen and Antonio, the Hammers they give themselves a heart-stopping victory. At the home of Italian Koleosho’s Burnley, the team coached by David Moyes did not shine in the first half and even went behind at the start of the second half, when Jay Rodriguez wrong-footed Areola with a penalty kicked centrally. In the 85th minute, Burnley was buzzing because the 34-year-old’s goal could be the first positive home result of the season. Carried away by Kudus’ play, however, West Ham wakes up just when the hosts begin to smell victory. The former Ajax player crossed in the middle in the 86th minute, causing O’Shea’s own goal and, five minutes later, he repeated it by offering Soucek the three-point cross. The Czech midfielder makes no mistakes, West Ham wins and moves to -3 from sixth place.

LUTON TOWN-CRYSTAL PALACE 2-1

A triumph that is worth double, especially considering the results of Burnley and Sheffield United. Luton Town beat Crystal Palace and moved up to +4 from the relegation zone, leaving the pitch amidst the applause and chants of its fans. In the first half Kaminski worked hard to keep a clean sheet, but Luton showed their best in the second half, especially after the visitors’ temporary equaliser. The match heated up immediately after the break: the first goal was scored by Edouard, who deceived Palace with a goal which was later disallowed due to a handball. In the 72nd minute Mengi scored the 1-0 following a corner, but Olise restored the balance after just two minutes. The 21-year-old Frenchman invents a Robben-style play: descending to the right, dribbling against Ahmada, then returning to the left foot and curling a shot to the far post. The decisive goal, in the 84th minute, was scored by Jacob Brown. On the pitch for 4 minutes, the Scotsman emerged behind the Palace defenders and scored the final 2-1 with a slide.
