Wolverhampton players celebrate victory against Liverpool FC

As of: March 3, 2026 • 11:37 p.m

A bitter setback for Liverpool FC in the fight for the Champions League. The “Reds” lost with late goals against the bottom of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Without the injured Florian Wirtz, Liverpool FC suffered another setback after their interim high in the English Premier League.

After four competitive game wins in a row, the Reds were embarrassed by a 1-2 (0-0) defeat at the bottom of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and missed the jump to fourth place.

Liverpool dominant, but not compelling enough

Although Liverpool clearly dominated the game at the Molineux Stadium, they found it very difficult to create top-class scoring chances, especially before the break. Shortly after halftime, Cody Gakpo hit the crossbar when he tipped the ball away from the better-positioned Curtis Jones (51′).

Gomes and André shock Liverpool late

But things got even worse for the champions: Rodrigo Gomes scored for the blatant outsiders with their very first shot on goal (78th). Mohamed Salah managed to equalize after ten games without a goal (83′). But André scored in stoppage time to give the hosts the win (90+4).

Liverpool had recently achieved good results, but were only sporadically convincing. The last two away games were both narrowly won 1-0 – at Sunderland and at Nottingham. In Wolverhampton the “Lucky Punch” didn’t work this time.

Chelsea could overtake the “Reds” on Wednesday, and the gap to Aston Villa (4th) and Manchester United (3rd) could also grow larger. At least four Premier League teams will play in the Champions League next season. If English teams continue to perform well in the European Cup, fifth place should be enough for qualification.

Another duel in the FA Cup

Liverpool and Wolverhampton will meet again on Friday (03/06/26) – and again at the same location. In the FA Cup, Wolves host Liverpool in the fifth round. Wirtz will probably still be missing in this game. The “Reds” then continue in the Champions League – with the first leg of the round of 16 at Galatasaray on March 10th.

The next league duel for Liverpool is on March 15th against Tottenham Hotspur, who are in danger of relegation. The Wolves have to play away at Brentford, but even after the sensational win on Tuesday evening, they need a little “miracle” to stay in the league: with ten game days to go, the gap to 17th place is eleven points.
