Pregnant porpoise washed up in Ostend

The employees of the Museum of Natural Sciences transferred the animal to Boudewijn Seapark. The vet examined the porpoise and saw that the female is pregnant. It remains to be seen whether mother and baby will make it.

The porpoise was wounded on the tail fin and was bleeding. The animal of about fifty kilograms and one and a half meters long is now being cared for in Bruges. As soon as possible, the animal will be transferred to a center in the Netherlands that is better equipped for harboring porpoises.

Watch the report of the previous rescue action here:

It is still unclear how the harbor porpoise got stranded. Storm Corrie raged over our coast this week. Stormy weather conditions can cause porpoises or dolphins to get into trouble and wash ashore.

Earlier this month, another porpoise died after it washed ashore in Koksijde.
