Fans of Rot-Weiss Essen are attracting attention with a crazy campaign. The supporters of the third division soccer team presented a goal post in the stands during the relegation first leg against SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
It is said to be a post from the stadium of rival MSV Duisburg. “MSV: Out of the dream. Your post in our trunk,” read the Essen posters.
The post is said to have been stolen in Duisburg on Friday night. “Things keep happening that you can’t imagine,” Christopher Mainka, managing director of the city’s Stadionmanagement GmbH, is quoted by the “NRZ”.
He confirmed the break-in and theft.
Hitting the post enabled RWE to relegate
Because Duisburg’s Rasim Bulic only hit the post in stoppage time in Duisburg’s 1-1 draw against Viktoria Köln on the last matchday of the 3rd league and Essen also scored the 3-2 winning goal in Ulm in stoppage time, RWE actually has a chance of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. The Essen team moved past MSV in the table and secured third place.
Coach Uwe Koschinat’s team won the first leg against Fürth 1-0 in the stadium on Hafenstrasse. The second leg takes place on Tuesday in Fürth.
