Fifty years after the delivery of the 917 approved for the Count Rossi road, Porsche returns to put plaque and arrows on a prototype developed for the 24 hours of Le Mans
Pending the departure of the 2025 edition of the 24 hours of Le Mans, Porsche surprised everyone by presenting a specimen approved on the road of Prototype 963, deployed in the Queen Hypercar category. A one-off that embodies in the most faithful way possible the concept of “racing car with plates and arrows”, differing from its counterpart engaged in the 24 hours of Le Mans For rather marginal details. While engine, frame and bodywork are strictly related to those of the 963 LMDH. And it is not the first time that in that of Zuffenhausen a track fireball has been put on the road: already in 1975 Count Rossi, patron of Martini, had requested a specimen of Porsche 917 driveable on the road. A unique creation, which was able to approve only by contacting the motorization of the American state of theAlabamawith the promise to guide this special 917 everywhere except on the roads of Alabama. The lucky owner of the new 963 RSP is instead Roger S. Penskefounder of the team that manages the Porsche Hypercar in the endurance world championship and in Imesa.
Porsche 963 RSP, the technique
–
To move the Porsche 963 RSP is the same engine of the racing car, i.e. a 4.6 V8 hybrid derived from that adopted by the Porsche 918 Spyder, a road hypercar presented in 2013 680 hp. In short moments, the MGU hybrid component also contributes to this, which produces up to 68 HP. To allow the 963 RSP to be driven on the road, this engine has been adapted in order to be compatible with petrol found at conventional distributors. The delivery curve is slightly softened.
Porsche 963 RSP, the outsiders
–
The carbon fiber body and Kevlar of the Porsche 963 RSP was subjected to a complex process of paintingunusual for a modern racing car, so the practice consists in the use of adhesive films. The chosen color was called “Martini Grey“, because made by sampling the 917 road of Count Rossi, now owned by a French driver and collector. Thanks to the help of the division SONDERWUNSCHspecialized in the creation of unique Porsche in the world, the bodywork has been further modified by covering some slits and appendages not compatible with circulation on the public road.
Porsche 963 RSP, the interiors
–
The tribute to the Porsche 917 of Conte Rossi also continues in the interiors, modified with a setting similar to that used in the case of the antensee 50 years ago. To embellish the scaride of the 963 Coverings in Light brown and Alcantara skinin addition to ventilated and more padded seats. Strictly single-seater, the 963 RSP offers the driver even small rooms to store anti-ruffles, helmet and steering wheel, when removed, as well as a Portabicchieri fixed to the central console. There is no infotainment display, of course, but a classic collection of levers and buttons to manage the “brain” of what remains in all respects a car born for the track.
