Popularity of clover jackets is growing: ‘It’s the fun that makes it so much fun’

Four pubs in Norg were filled with 184 Klaverjack players this afternoon. It was the 22nd edition of the Klaverjas Café Tour. “We always organize this Klaverjas Café Tour on the last Saturday of February. It is a Klaverjas afternoon in which the participants plant a clover with their mate at four different locations, so per couple,” says organizer Arnold Zwaneveld, of the café of the same name.

The event has grown in popularity since its inception. “The very first time we only had twenty couples, so forty people. But everyone was immediately enthusiastic. The number of participants immediately grew very quickly to seventy to eighty couples. And in the last five years we have reached ninety or a hundred couples and a hundred couples is the maximum number,” says Zwaneveld.

There are a striking number of young participants. About half are younger than 35 years. The youngest is Jos Kuiper at 21 years old. “It’s the conviviality that makes it so much fun. It’s not just about playing cards. It’s about being together. Making it a pleasant afternoon,” says Kuiper.
