The new Pope is chosen. Leo XIV comes from Chicago – and is still connected to his hometown by love for a sports team based there.

A new head of the Roman Catholic Church-and an old fan: The newly elected Pope Leo XIV has a special connection to the US baseball world. Because the native Chicagoer is an avowed trailer of the White Sox.

The traditional club from the Major League Baseball can look forward to prominent support. As John Prevost, brother of the new Pope, told WGN in conversation with the television station, Leo XIV’s heart has long been beating for the team from his hometown.

With this passion he follows a well -known role model: Pope Francis also opened openly to his club, the football club San Lorenzo from Buenos Aires.

So far, the White Sox have won three titles in the World Series, most recently in 2005. At that time they ended an 88-year-old dry spell. The team has been waiting for another championship since then.

Leo XIV was elected as the new Pope on Thursday. In the future, as head of the Roman Catholic Church, he will lead the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
