Polish Swiatek wins US Open and takes third Grand Slam title

The Polish Iga Swiatek has for the first time in her career the US Open won. The global number one defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur in two sets (6-2, 7-6) to take the third grand slam title in her career.

The 21-year-old Polish took less than two hours to beat her opponent. After a smooth opening set by Swiatek, Jabeur managed to fight back in the second set and forced a tiebreak, but Swiatek proved to be the better player there too.

It is Swiatek’s third Grand Slam title. She previously won Roland Garros in Paris twice, in 2020 and this year. Until this edition, she never made it past the fourth round at the US Open. It is the first time since 2016 that a tennis player has won two Grand Slam tournaments in a season. Six years ago, Germany’s Angelique Kerber won the Australian Open and the US Open.

The Polish was previously labeled as the title favorite for the tournament, but she herself did not take it for granted. “I wasn’t really expecting much from it. This tournament was a real challenge”, she said after the final. “I have proven myself mentally and I coped well with the pressure. It was a great tournament.”
