“Some victims lose significant amounts of money,” police say. “One of the victims saw more than 45,000 euros disappear from her bank account.” The police want to continue to draw attention to this form of fraud in the hope of reducing the number of victims.
Itsme
The criminals usually contact their victims by telephone and introduce themselves as an employee of the bank or Card Stop. They then claim that suspicious transactions have occurred on the victim’s bank account. The scammers supposedly want to secure the victim’s bank account and proceed in two ways.
In the first scam, they ask the victim to register via Itsme or via a link that leads to a fake banking website. In other cases, a fake bank employee comes to the victim’s home to collect the bank card or other valuables.
Never a bank employee at your home
The police emphasize that a bank or Card Stop itself will never ask you to use Itsme over the telephone or to provide PIN codes and login details. The bank or Card Stop will also never suggest taking over your computer or smartphone from a distance. So never install programs such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer. A bank employee will never come to your home to pick up your bank card.
