Police receive nine tips about mysterious death of Cas (23) from De Schiphorst: man who ran after him did not report

After the broadcast of Opsporing Verzocht, the police received nine tips that could help in the investigation into the mysterious death of Cas Steenbergen from De Schiphorst (municipality of Meppel).

The man who ran after Cas when he cycled away from the grounds of the equestrian competition in Veeningen after the party in July 2022 has not yet reported. A police spokesperson said this when asked on Wednesday. The police do not want to say whether they know who this man is.

In the broadcast of Investigation Requested was specifically asked about this person. According to the police, the man can be seen on surveillance images at the entrance to the party site. Cas is also in those images. It can be seen that the resident of De Schiphorst rides along the cycle path along the party site and that a few seconds later a man runs after Cas. Then they both disappear from view, behind the party tent.

More than half a minute later, the running man can be seen again. “But it cannot be seen whether there has been contact between him and Cas.” The police did not show the images to Investigation Requested, because they first wanted to give the man the opportunity to report.

Relatives

Cas’ relatives also shared the contents of the surveillance images in July and called on witnesses to come forward.

Their son died in hospital in mid-August last year. His parents found him four weeks earlier in a pool of blood and unconscious in bed. That was the morning after the party in Veeningen. Cas turned out to be seriously injured. For a long time, the police assumed it was a fatal bicycle accident. Based on the new information, the police will not say what, it appears that something else may have happened to Cas when he left the party site or on the way home.

Police are now investigating whether he suffered the serious injuries at the hands of one or more other people. About the tips received after Opsporing Verzocht, the spokesperson said: “It is clear that there is information that can be used for further investigation.”
